Senators have been discussing for more than a year to sanction a bill that might create the path for a regulatory structure that will govern autonomous vehicles. As the year-end approaches, lawmakers are rolling out one last effort to pass comprehensive bill.

The AV START Act is supported by the John Thune (Senate Commerce Committee Chairman), but has not moved onto the floor after Democrats such as Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Diane Feinstein expressed concerns about the legislation. The opposing lawmakers mentioned concerns over privacy, safety standards, and whether users must be forced into private adjudication over legal criticism. Many of those issues have since been dealt with, as per an updated summary document and bill text obtained by the media.

If passed, the bill might loosen up most of the federal laws pertaining to self-driving cars. AV makers such as General Motors and Tesla will be capable of developing and marketing these cars without particularly regulatory measure.

Speaking of self-driving cars, BMW opponents and ride-hailing firms are mulling over joining its group for designing self-driving vehicles as auto sector profits come below rising heat, claimed Klaus Froehlich, board member at BMW, to the media in an interview.

Ride-hailing firms and carmakers have wished to develop self-driving vehicles as a mean to make an entry in the business of handset-hailed robotaxis. On the other hand, they are making an entry in a crowded area where the likes of Alphabet and Apple have been pumping billions of dollars into vehicles that can have auto-driving capabilities.

“Unluckily, everyone thought they will be the winner and will have a huge ride-sharing business,” claimed Froehlich to the media on account of the Paris Motor Show. BMW, on the other hand, needed to spread the price of investment and began a group that now comprises Fiat Chrysler, Magna, and Mobileye along with auto suppliers Continental AG and Delphi Automotive.
